#Flash: Exposure To Pesticides Cause Preterm Birth And Incre
A recent study has looked at both the cause and effect of pesticides on pregnant women, unborn children and their health and development after birth. Maternal and cord blood samples were collected from 221 healthy mother-infant couples for evaluation of genotoxic effects and quantitative determination of organo-chlorine pesticides. Higher organo-chlorine pesticides levels were observed in maternal blood of preterm than term subjects with the maximum concentration found for aldrin in maternal blood and dieldrin in cord blood. These findings may show that the birth weight in newborns may be altered by increased oxidative damage and genotoxicity brought about by pesticides and these markers could be employed for early detection of pesticides related ailments and toxicities.
