On this World Heart Day, a brain-dead man became the 16th heart donor in 22 months in Surat, giving a new lease of life to as many as six people. Officials of Donate Life, an organization that works for organ donation in Surat, got in touch with the family of the donor who had been declared brain-dead due to brain hemorrhage post his collapse. They convinced them to donate his organs. The heart was transferred 269 km from Surat to Mumbai in 107 minutes and was transplanted into 42-year-old Mumbai resident at a Mumbai hospital, who had been suffering from heart problems since 2012. His kidneys and liver were accepted by Ahmedabad-based Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) for transplantation and his eyes were donated to Lokdrishti Bank.
