8 newborns who were 2-4 days old, died at Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Assam in the last 24 hours. While 5 died on Wednesday, three were claimed dead on Thursday. Hospital authorities claim that most deaths were due to low birth weight and not because of the negligence of the doctors. State health minister has given a clean chit to the hospital authorities but has also asked the Director of Medical Education to conduct an inquiry.

In most cases, lack of proper antenatal care leads to low birth weight of newborns. Here most weighed below 2.5 kilos at birth and one newborn was less than a kilo.Hospital authorities believe that it was just a “coincidence” that the number shot up between Wednesday and Thursday.

According to last week release of 2016 data by the Union health ministry last week, Madhya Pradesh with 47 deaths per 1000 births recorded the highest infant mortality rate (IMR) in India. Assam and Odisha with 44 deaths were placed second in the list followed by Uttar Pradesh (43) and Rajasthan (41)...
