The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has proposed amending Rule 96 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to make the 'Ex-Factory price' a mandatory label for locally made drugs and 'Landed Price' a mandatory label for imported drugs.

'Ex-Factory price' means 'the price at the factory, and does not include any other charges, such as delivery or subsequent taxes.'

'Landed price' of an imported item means the total cost of purchasing the item, and getting it from its country of origin to the country in which it will be sold.

'The idea is expected 'to give benefit to the consumer by cutting down the profit margin as far as possible. Once the manufacturers start labelling both the ex-factory price and the MRP, the consumers will know the profit margins and will be able to make wise decision' says a government official. A draft notification from the government is expected soon.
