Adequate nutrition is essential for proper development in the newborn infant. This is of particular importance in the premature, low-birth weight infant. If the infant is unable to tolerate oral feeds, as is frequently the case with a premature infant, enteral feeds can be administered via a small bore gastric feeding tube. If a concomitant intestinal anomaly precludes enteral nutrition (EN), parenteral nutrition (PN) can be instituted to serve as a bridge until EN can be initiated. We present a case of a newborn premature infant with duodenal stenosis and a significant cardiac abnormality who required early operative intervention due to failure to thrive on parenteral nutrition. A novel method of post-operative feeding was employed utilizing a transanastomotic feeding tube placed through a Malecot gastrostomy tube. The advantages of the procedure are discussed....
