From October 1, Aadhaar number will be required to establish the identity of a deceased person for registration of his/her death. Registrar General India (RGI), under Section 3(3) of the Registration of Birth and Death Act, 1969, has issued a notification saying that the Aadhaar number for applying for a death certificate. This will result in ensuring that the information provided by the relative is correct and will help provide an accurate count of the number of deaths in the country. This will be applicable to all states and UTs except J&K, Assam & Meghalaya.

An applicant who is not aware of the Aadhaar number will be required to give a certificate which states that the deceased person did not possess Aadhaar number and any false information provided will be considered as an offence as per the provisions of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 and also Registration of Birth and Death Act, 1969...
