Antibiotic Use in Hospital Patient Increases C. diff Risk in
Patients who occupy hospital beds in which the previous occupant received antibiotics have an increased risk for developing a Clostridium difficile infection, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The risk is small but of “potential importance” given the frequency of antibiotic use in hospitals, the investigators said. An estimated 55% of patients throughout the United States receive antibiotics during a hospital stay and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, which were the subject of this study, increased significantly between 2006 and 2012....
