Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has again appealed to the Prime Minister's Office(PMO) to amend the maximum time for abortions currently at 20 weeks to 24 weeks for under Section 5 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The ministry had earlier submitted the draft but the PMO asked them to concentrate on certain sex abortions. This time, the ministry has specified that this increased time period will be applicable only for rare cases, which involve rape or violence, or in case a medical practitioner diagnoses a threat to the life of the mother. Guidelines for abortions would be set once approval is received.
