Osteoporosis is a common condition, especially in postmenopausal women, but it often remains undetected until after fracture occurs. Coming from the Greek, literally translated, osteoporosis means ‘porous bone’. it is a ‘silent disease’ and can remain undetected until a fall, often low impact, which can have devastating consequences. It can cause severe pain and disability. Hip fractures account for around half of all fractures and over half of those suffering a hip fracture are unable to return to independent living, while over one quarter will die within a year.

The prevalence of osteoporosis increases with age, from 2% at 50 years to over 25% at 80 years in women, reflecting the marked increase in the rate of bone loss once oestrogen's protective effect is lost post-menopause. Treatments aim to slow bone destruction and prevent fractures and there is evidence that bone loss can be restored.
