Cabinet approves 75 new medical colleges
The Cabinet on Wednesday approved 75 new medical colleges, leading to an additional 15,700 MBBS seats in the country.

The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approval for the establishment of 75 additional government medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals under phase-III of the ongoing centrally sponsored scheme.

“The establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals, would lead to an increase in the availability of qualified health professionals, improve tertiary care in the government sector, utilize existing infrastructure of districts hospitals and promote affordable medical education in the country," the government said in an official statement.

“New medical colleges would be set up in under-served areas. Preference will be given to aspirational districts and district hospitals having 300 beds," it said.

Focusing on the creation of healthcare infrastructure, the government earlier approved the establishment of 58 new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals. Of these, 39 medical colleges under phase-I have already started functioning, while the remaining 29 would be made functional by 2022. Under Phase-II, 18 new medical colleges have been approved.

This would make more sense if the number of postgraduate seats are also proportionately increased.

Theoretically, some may say/claim that more doctors are needed. However, practically seeing the situation now, hardly 25\% MBBS & more qualified doctors get good jobs. The focus should not be on more numbers of doctors now, or else doctors will find it tough to get jobs.
