The Cabinet has passed the amendments regarding the Dentists Act, 1948 (16 of 1948). The Act has now been amended to Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and will now be tabled in the Parliament for approval.
The major amendment is the change in the membership in the Dental Council of India as well as the State/Joint Dental Councils.
As per the current Act, out of the 6 members nominated by the Central Government, at least one should be registered and practising in a Union Territory and at least two shall be registered in Plan B of State Register. But the ministry has now removed the mandatory representation of Plan B of the State Register in order to reduce the redundancy.
