Cabinet approves proposal for promulgation of IMC (Amendment
The Union Cabinet approved the proposal for promulgation of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019 to allow the Board of Governors (BoG) to run the apex body for regulating medical education.

The approval shall see a fresh ordinance promulgated to ensure that the BoG can continue to function in lieu of the MCI.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister approved two proposals - promulgation of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019, and necessary official amendments in the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2018, pending in Parliament for replacing the said ordinance.

A senior Health Ministry official said that through the MCI was superseded in September 2018 through an ordinance but it could not be approved by Parliament and was on the verge of lapse.

The proposal shall allow the BoG of the following:

- Continue to exercise the powers of MCI and that of the central government under Section 10A of the Indian Medical Council (IMC) Act, 1956 as per the earlier ordinance.

- Ensures that work accomplished by BoG under the provisions of earlier Ordinance is validated and may continue.

- The period for which the BOG was appointed increased from 1 year to 2 years.
