The health department joint secretary has ordered Delhi government hospitals, with more than 500 beds, to purchase medicines and consumables on their own. Earlier, hospitals bought their medicinal supply through tenders by the CPA (Central Procurement Agency) but now these hospitals will have to look for alternative methods to procure the full quota of medicines, consumables and equipment.

This comes after two months of a report being submitted to the Chief Minister which showed less than 50% medicines were available at several Delhi government hospitals. The heads of more than 500-bed hospitals have been allowed to procure medical equipment that costs up to Rs 50 lakh per unit. The government is also contemplating appointing a bio-medical engineer in all hospitals with more than 100 beds to ensure that all equipment are up and running.
