Dexamethasone, the familiar glucocorticoid, reduced deaths in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with severe disease by one-third compared to those receiving usual care, according to topline interim results from the RECOVERY trial released on 16 June.

Key findings:

• Deaths in the dexamethasone arm were reduced by one-third among patients receiving mechanical ventilation, and by one-fifth among patients requiring oxygen versus patients receiving usual care.

• But dexamethasone showed no benefit among patients who did not require respiratory support.

• The analysis is part of the RECOVERY (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy) trial in which hospitalized patients are randomized to various open-label treatments.

• Besides dexamethasone, these include tocilizumab (Actemra), convalescent plasma, azithromycin, and lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra) and hydroxychloroquine.

• Based on these results, the scientists believe that the drug could prevent nearly one death in the treatment of around eight ventilated patients, or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone.

• This is the same study that earlier this month showed the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine was not working against the coronavirus.
