MDCT is the most widely used imaging modality for the diagnostic workup of patients with hematuria. A standard imaging protocol usually includes an unenhanced and a contrast-enhanced acquisition. Unenhanced images are used for baseline density measurements of masses, but they also provide information about the presence of intralesional fat and calcium. The most important use of contrast-enhanced imaging in differentiating benign from malignant masses is focusing on the presence or absence of enhancement within a mass. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of split-bolus portal venous phase DECT urography for detecting and characterising lesions in the urinary system in patients with hematuria and to assess reduction in radiation dose.
