Doctors perform atrial septal defect closure in heart without using bypass machine
In what is said to be a first in the world, the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) hospital doctors conducted open heart surgery without using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. The doctors made a pericardial crown by using pericardium of right atrium of heart to prevent flow of blood. By using index finger, they accessed the hole on the wall of the heart. To keep the brain and liver at normal temperature, the doctors drained the blood from superior vena cava and inferior vena cave in the pericardial cavity and then collected the blood in sterile bottles with specific fluid in it to prevent it from clotting...
