Since mid-February average daily tests have increased by 2.3 times in the last 12 weeks. A decline in the case positivity rate has been reported since the last two weeks. The number of districts where the positive rate has shown a downward trend has increased, health secretary Lav Aggarwal said.

The number of districts that have reported a decline in Covid-19 case positivity has increased from 210 between April 29 and May 5 to 303 districts between May 13 and 19, as per the ministry. The case positivity rate refers to the percentage of all Covid-19 tests that turn out to be positive.

As per the health ministry data, there are 22 states with more than a 15 percent positivity rate; 13 states with a 5 to 15 percent positivity rate and one state where the positivity rate is less than 5 percent. Six states have shown a decline in cases and a decline in positivity rate in the last 3 weeks, as of May 20. These states are Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.

Eight districts have shown a continued decrease in cases and the positivity rate over the last three weeks. These districts are Pune, Thane, Satara, Nagpur in Maharashtra; Thrissur, Kottayam in Kerala; Gurugram, Haryana and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. While the overall positivity rate seems to be coming down, there are states and districts which have reported an increase in cases and positivity rate.

Seven states have shown a rise in cases and in the positivity rate over the last three weeks, as of May 20. These states are: Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Mizoram Seven districts have shown a continued increase in cases and positivity over the last three weeks. These are: Malappuram, Kollam in Kerala; East Godavari, Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh; Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu and Belagavi, Karnataka.

As per the health ministry, the Covid-19 testing has reported a consistent increase across the country. "More Rapid Antigen Tests should be done because you can get results rapidly and then isolate the patient quickly," said Dr Balram Bhargava, director-general, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). "Our target is to do 25 lakh tests by the end of this month and 45 lakh tests by the end of June," said Dr Bhargava.
