In an effort to ensure generic medicines have the same quality and efficacy as their branded counterparts, the health ministry has made bio-equivalence studies on any drug mandatory before it is launched in the Indian market. Bio-equivalence studies are tests conducted on humans to evaluate any drug's dissolution and efficacy levels in blood. If two products are bio-equivalent, it means they are same for all intents and purposes, including quality and efficacy . The health ministry has issued a gazette notification to this effect.

The move comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement that the government is bringing a legal framework to ensure doctors prescribe generic medicines, which are priced far lower than branded ones.
