FADING GOLD CROWNS AND SILVER RESTORATIONS
The gold crowns have been reduced down to nowhere because of tooth colored restorations and ceramic crowns. Amalgam fillings are history because of mercury toxicity. The amalgam was considered very useful because of its strength and longetivity.
In the olden era, it was a common finding to have gold fillings and gold crowns. They were technique sensitive and adapt well to margins. Because of their marginal fit, they can be adopted. In the cases of worn out teeth, the gold crowns are preferred.
Mercury free amalgam are available for usage. The esthetics of white fillings are playing an important role and better materials have filled the dental market. Preference of white tooth has relegated amalgam to all newer materials. The composite resins, glass ionomer, and ceramic indirect filling materials are fast-paced restorations replacing gold and silver, but yet at times they cannot equal their popularity. In some situations, considering the case, gold and silver still have a say.
For a better future, the availability of multiple restorative materials would leave us to make our choice for a filling material out of our filling cabinet.
