2 cases of successful operations were conducted at Nimhans hospital using the newly built intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging (IOMRI) operation theatre. This advanced technology enabled doctors to map the affected area in his brain before surgery, ensuring a much safer procedure.

Being the third facility in the country and the first in South India with this technology, it helps as a quality check during surgery to ensure that causative tumours and other lesions are removed completely and that no other parts of the brain are touched during operation. This allows availing the MRI facility by 2 OTs while a patient is undergoing surgery.

Some of the advantages of IOMRI are:

- It can be used for neurosurgical procedures to minimize morbidity and increase the extent of tumour removal from critical areas of brain
- Enables surgeon to use neuro-navigation techniques and intra-operative imaging during neurosurgery
- Increases operational efficiency and optimizes working costs
- Widens scope of research in neurosurgery
