#FirstEver: Dual-Lobe Live Liver Transplant
In a first, doctors performed a dual-lobe live liver transplant on a 55-year-old patient suffering from an end-stage liver disease at a hospital recently. The man’s wife and sister-in-law donated a portion of their liver each, giving a new lease of life to the man. This is said to be the first such transplant surgery performed in Pune.

“The patient had to opt for recurrent admissions due to complications related to chronic liver disease. His liver function was deteriorating, hence the need for an early live liver transplant was felt. This is the first successful dual-lobe liver transplant in Pune and western Maharashtra,” said hepatologist Pavan Hanchanle of Jupiter Hospital.

“In dual-lobe liver transplant, three surgeries are performed simultaneously. Therefore, it involves more complexities and challenges. Both the donors and patient have recovered and are living a healthy life today,” said Gaurav Chaubal, the hospital’s multi-organ transplant surgeon.

Since there was a lengthy waiting list for cadaver liver from a brain-dead donor, the family members of the patient came forward to make the donation.
