According to a study conducted at the University of San Diego, COVID-19 is a vascular illness rather than a respiratory one. This could explain why some COVID patients develop blood clots and have "COVID feet," which aren't typical symptoms of a respiratory disease. The research pinpoints how the virus causes damage to the cells of the vascular system. The researchers created a pseudovirus that only included the S protein and no other parts of the virus, in order to demonstrate in the lab that this protein is sufficient to induce disease on its own. The effects on the respiratory system are consequence of the inflammation of the vascular tissue in lungs.
