#Flash: Eye problems more common among children exposed to d
This study looked into the associations between maternal diabetes before or during pregnancy and the risk of high refractive error (RE) in offspring until they reached the age of 25. It was found that prenatal exposure to maternal diabetes was linked to a 39% higher risk of having a high RE. The increased risks were more significant in offspring of mothers who had diabetic complications than in mothers who had diabetes but no diabetic complications. As a result, early ophthalmological screening in offspring of women with diabetes identified before or during pregnancy should be encouraged.
