#Flash: First Time in India: Japanese Liver Transplant Techn
In June 2020 & May 2021, a team of surgeons from Jupiter Hospital in Pune transplanted incredibly small liver transplants in 2 babies, who were only 6 and 8 months old and weighed less than 6 kg. Because these babies do not meet the ideal 10 kg weight criterion for transplant, a Japanese approach of reduced small-for-size-liver graft was used. Babies not fitting the transplant criterion run the risk of being denied the treatment or have life-threatening complications. With Japanese technique both the babies have recovered well, their liver grafts have grown in size, and they are expected to have a normal life.
