Fear of contamination and a lack of awareness exacerbated the decline in organ donation during the Covid pandemic lockdowns. Every year, almost 3.5 lakh people in India require an organ transplant, but only about 11,000 transplants are performed. In India, the total rate of organ donation is quite low, at roughly 0.52 per million population, compared to 36.07 donors per million in the US. Organ donation in India needs to pick up speed to close the huge gap between those who need organs and those who can donate them.
