Researchers discovered that wearable devices such as the Fitbit or Apple watch can aid in the detection of disease even before the onset of symptoms. The experiment had 31 participants who were given a nasal dosage of H1N1 flu and 18 others who were administered a common cold virus. Participants wore the sensor wristband for 4 days before and 5 days after inoculation. With up to 92% accuracy for H1N1 and 88% accuracy for the cold virus, the researchers could distinguish who was infected and who wasn't. This isn't a technique to diagnose COVID or the flu, but it is a tool to track metabolic changes that indicate a viral inoculation.
