Researchers from Nanjing University's School of Life Sciences in China claim to have identified the reason showing that low microRNA (miRNA) immunity increases the risk of Covid-19 infection in older adults and people with diabetes. The study indicates that miRNAs are an important component of the endogenous RNA-based immune system to fight virus infection.

Authors discovered 4 circulating miRNAs that are high in healthy people but substantially lower in the elderly and diabetic patients. Researchers hope that a better understanding of miRNA function may lead to new approaches to COVID-19 prevention, surveillance, and treatment.
