Hyderabad doctors give Nigerian baby a new lease of life
City doctors successfully performed a complicated artery surgery on a one-month-old Nigerian baby, who was helped by the Indian embassy and a Nigerian air force doctor to reach Hyderabad. The baby girl was diagnosed with a potentially fatal condition known as transposition of great arteries.

"In this condition, the artery to the lungs instead of arising from the right side, rises from the left side and the right side carries impure blood to the body,” said Dr BR Jagannath, head of paediatric cardiology department at Star hospital, where the surgery took place.

The mother of the baby, Ojomo, said a local cardiologist in Nigeria picked up on this condition quickly and contacted the hospital. “The baby needed a corrective surgery urgently as in these cases, 90% of children die within a year of birth,” said Dr Ramesh Dasari.

“I came to India with a lot of hope and the doctors have made it possible. I am absolutely speechless and couldn’t thank enough,” Ojomo added
