IMA uses semantics to undo PM's generic drug proposal
Prime Minister Modi's re solve to ensure that doc tors prescribe only generic medicines is being undone by some creative interpretation of Medical Council of India's (MCI) `code' for doctors.Reacting to MCI injunction that doctors should prescribe generic drugs, Indian Medical Association (IMA), said “should means may and may means optional or preferable“. Meanwhile, doctors across the country demanded that the prime minister ban companies from manufacturing any generic medicine with trade name and ensure they produce only high quality generics, instead of cracking down only on doctors.

Though the PM said he would bring in a legal framework to ensure that doctors prescribed by generic name, there is as yet no new law, either for the pharma industry or for doctors and chemists.
