If dengue is viral infection than why it's treat by antibiotic instead of antiviral medication ?

Routine management of Dengue fever does not require antibiotics even as per NICD guidelines of India. Unless there is documented co-infection, giving antibiotics don' t make difference in outcome and is not justified. I can vouch with honesty that in my clinical practice of over 25 years while treating hundreds of Dengue cases, the antibiotics must have been given in very few cases( single digit numbers). So far lost only one Dengue patient (who also had cirrhosis of liver) who succumbed to Dengue Shock Syndrome despite all intensive management. In Hospital in private I admit patients. our other colleagues also don' t use antibiotics even in Hospitalised patients of Dengue fever unless specifically indicated.... Read more
