"Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) occurs in 5%–10% of patients and is the most common cause of failure of retinal detachment (RD) surgery. The Silicone Study further classified PVR into focal or diffuse posterior PVR, subretinal PVR and anterior PVR. Subretinal fibrosis is reported to occur in up to 15% of rhegmatogenous RDs. Retinal pigment epithelial cells may migrate on the detached outer retinal surface, proliferate and differentiate into mesenchymal cells.

This article reports three patients with subretinal bands associated with retinal detachment in chronic retinal detachments who underwent successful retinal reattachment. Subretinal bands before and after surgery can be identified on clinical examination and spectral domain optical coherence tomography.
