In Rare Surgery, Doctors Fix Man's Ruptured Heart
In a rare surgery, doctors at Ramesh Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur repaired a ruptured heart. Narasaraopet resident A Srinivas Reddy had chest pain for two days. He was rushed to the hospital late Saturday night after experiencing severe chest pain, shortness of breath. The patient was admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital in a semi-unconscious state.

The doctors switched to advanced technology to take up sutureless techniques to repair the fissure in the heart. Having advanced information about the critical condition of the patient, a team of doctors waited, readied multiple emergency plans and executed immediately after the admission of the patient.

The doctors performed angiography and surgery in a very short stipulated time. The rent was repaired with sutureless technique on emergency heart-lung machine support. “Rupture of the heart” known as “Post MI cardiac perforation” is one of the dreaded complications following acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

It is said to be the first surgery performed in Andhra Pradesh. Dr P.Ramesh Babu, managing director of Ramesh Hospitals said that heart attack is a condition where heart muscle gets necrosed following lack of oxygen and blood. “The cardiac rupture is not only a dreaded complication but a nightmare for the medical community. We are happy that our team of doctors put an exemplary effort and saved this patient from the jaws of death,” said Dr Ramesh Babu.

He said that cardiac rupture is a catastrophic complication following an acute heart attack. It is almost fatal. Nearly 80-90% of such patients succumb. Only 5-10 per cent reach a hospital. Out of this rare one or two make out successfully. He said that they could handle such critical cases thanks to the presence of experienced multiple specialities and super specialities.

Ramesh Babu congratulated the team of doctors consisting of cardiothoracic surgeons Dr Siva Prasad, Dr Nageswara Rao, chief cardiac Anesthetist Dr P Srinivasa Rao, interventional cardiologist Dr Raja Ramesh. The patient is stable and recovering.
