In a first, the PGIMER has conducted a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant of a 32-year-old woman from Ludhiana this week. Doctors say such transplants are rare, as it is not done on a regular basis in hospitals across the country.
According to PGI doctors, the transplant was performed on May 27 and the patient is stable now. The recipient was also diabetic, said the doctors. “This is a very rare because it was simultaneously done and pancreas and kidneys were transplanted into the patient. The PGI has done this for the first time,” Dr Ashish Sharma, Additional Professor, Department of Renal Transplant Surgery said. According to sources at the PGI, it took the doctors nearly seven hours to complete the operation.
