The differences between an omphalocele and umbilical cord hernia is derived from their different mechanisms of abnormal embryonic development. One crucial difference is the likelihood of abdominal organ incarceration within the abdominal wall defect. In this report we describe a patient, born with an umbilical cord hernia which was complicated by incarceration of the patient's gallbladder. Abdominal organ incarceration is an extremely uncommon complication of umbilical cord hernias and not typically seen in patients with omphalocele. The surgical management of these incarcerated hernias can be challenging and fraught with complications. A high index of suspicion is required to recognize the incarcerated structures and differentiate them from the expendable structures normally located in the umbilicus....
