For the first time ever, the Karnataka state government has issued an order on banning the sale of loose cigarettes, beedis and other tobacco products with immediate effect. With this Karnataka happens to be the 17th state in India to ban loose sale of tobacco products.
This decision had to be made as loose sale of the cigarettes defeated the entire objective of cautioning the person to quit smoking through the 85% warning sign on the cigarette packs.

As per the order, any person found guilty of selling such loose products, will be punishable by law as per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA)...
