Karnataka has no data on TB patients being treated in private hospitals even though WHO mandates that all medical facilities must report and notify governments about the number of tuberculosis cases they are handling.
Private hospital doctors are reluctant to share TB patients' records as it carries a social stigma as well as is not legally binding. While some hospitals have agreed, some are yet to do so. The government, however, will soon issue a notification to address the issue.
TB cases are very difficult to estimate as many of the patients do not divulge such details. Also, in many small clinics in rural areas where active TB follow up is non-existent, the standard protocol is not followed and they prescribe their own medicines.
