State Health Minister has introduced a bill called 'The Kerala Medical Education (Regulation and Control of Admission to Private Medical Education Institutions), 2017’ to regulate admission and fixing fees in private medical colleges in Kerala. It also includes provision for reservation of seats for persons belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes in these institutions.

The government has been receiving complaints regarding malpractices by various managements in the process of admission. In order to curb such practices, a legislation is tabled to regulate admission and fees in these institutions. An 11-member Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee, chaired by a retired judge of the supreme court, would be formed to determine fee and admission process and any person who is aggrieved by the Regulatory Committee's order could appeal before the high court within 30 days of the order.

The bill when passed will replace the Kerala Medical Education (Regulation and Control of Admission to private medical Educational Institutions) Ordinance, April, 2017.
