District Collector under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has directed college heads to deploy students in hospitals hit by the ongoing strike by nurses in Kerala, to which nursing students are protesting.

80,000 nurses were estimated to have participated in the indefinite strike on 17 July lead by The United Nurses Association (UNA) and Indian Nurses Association demanding higher wages. This has severely hampered the functioning of private hospitals and limited them to provide only emergency services. Therefore, they turned to nursing students.

Most of the medical fraternity feel it is against medical ethics comparing it to MBBS students posted as doctors when they go on strike. Since nurses who are not registered or have not completed their course are not allowed to practice in hospitals, it could also create legal roadblocks. They could be given basic tasks like checking blood pressure or wound dressing but any act of responsibility cannot be put on them "
