Health Officials in Mallapuram district of Kerala saw only 191 out of 700 in a camp arranged for providing immunization under the month-long measles-rubella (MR) vaccination programme that began on October 3. Way short of targets, the government is ready to extend the deadline from the current November 3.

Of the targeted 76 lakh children in the age group 9 months to 15 years, only 44.30 lakh, or 58%, had been covered in Kerala until October 28. The health officials have been facing challeges from the anti-vaccine lobby who are spreading fake messages by means of WhatsApp, Facebook, booklets etc. in spite of positive campaigning by religious and community leaders, people are unconvinced. According to some parents, doctors were found supporting both sides of the opinions on social media posts, which has confused them. It is alleged that such messages are being circulated by some doctors, activists and naturopathy physicians, with an intention to churn resistance.

As per the health officials, the resistance is only among 5-10% of the population while 50% are confused regarding the effectiveness of the vaccine scheme...
