While promotion of device brands during live surgeries and procedures is a common practice in India, many surgical societies in India and abroad have banned live surgeries from their conferences as also product promotion during academic sessions. Even in disciplines where surgical associations run by influential doctors resist attempts to stop live demos because they are big money grossers in a conference, a large number of individual doctors express their reservations. Live demos, they point out, increase risk to the patient.

Medical associations abroad have become wary of allowing live case broadcasts following several mishaps and ethical questions about risk to patients. They have largely opted for cadaveric workshops, deconstruction of recorded surgeries or procedures and hands-on training in simulation skills laboratories. But in India the enthusiasm goes on with as many as 20-30 live cases in one conference.
