The Maharashtra FDA has recalled 52,500 oxytocin injections under the brand name Oxymac, meant for veterinary use as they were not labelled “Not for human use, for animal treatment only” and were being sold for human use over 30 years.

According to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the oxytocin injection that are meant for animal use, must have an animal figure on the labeling and clearly indicate its use for veterinary purposes. In this case, the outer packaging neither had a labell nor an animal figure printed to indicate type of application. Thane-based Shree Jain Pharmaceuticals procured 1,000 such injections and sold them to 30 retailers, running the risk of sale for human patients. The FDA had procured the stock from United Pharma in Kamothe, which had procured 52,500 such injections from Uttar Pradesh. It has now written to the drug controllers of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab from where the stock was supplied.

A case of violations under Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, is expected to follow...
