The Government Dental College and Hospital will soon have a modern operation theatre for oral cancer, a chemotherapy department, and a dedicated team of three doctors, including, an onco surgeon, and nine nurses in its new oral cancer department. The state government has sanctioned around Rs10 crore for the new oral cancer department.

The decision was taken by the state health department to reduce the load on Tata Memorial Hospital. With this move, only the patients who need radiotherapy will be referred to Tata Memorial.

An Indian Council of Medical Research study shows 50 % of cancers in men and 20 % in women can directly be attributed to tobacco use.
