A 55-year-old man in Pune who had suffered from blood cancer remains infection-free for six months after receiving blood stem cells from his COVID-positive son. His doctor said that this could imply that the virus does not transmit through blood.

The Union government guidelines state that 28 days after hospital discharge or home isolation blood can be donated by a person who had suffered from Covid-19.

In this case due to complete damage of bone marrow due to chemotherapy, there was an urgent need for transplant. His son was found to be a fit donor but he was tested COVID positive. Due to urgency of the situation the transplant was done.

The patient had been monitored for symptoms and tested for COVID-19 after the transplant and did not develop the infection. It has been six months and the patient is doing well.

The virus is rarely detected in blood, and that the viral load is normally high in the throat and lungs with COVID infection. Possibility that there was insufficient virus in the bone marrow cells of the donor which didn't let the virus transmit says experts.
