'Nearly 5000 surgeries performed in major hospitals in Srina
Nearly 5,000 major surgeries have been performed in hospitals across Srinagar from August 5 till date. Providing the details, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, deputy commissioner of Srinagar, informed about the surgeries performed in all Government Medical College (GMC) associated hospitals, the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura and the SKIMS Medical College & Hospital at Bemina.

In GMC associated hospitals, the number of surgical procedures were over 3000 — including around 700 in the main trauma centre and over 800 in the main orthopedic Bone & Joints hospital and around 400 in the Super Speciality Hospital, said Choudhary while dismissing the news reports suggesting the healthcare and medicine crisis in Kashmir.

Primary healthcare across Kashmir has also been busy as usual with things picking up speed after Eid. In Srinagar alone, some 30,000 patients were in OPDs and around 1100 were admitted in IPDs of different centres, he said. Around 1200 surgeries were performed during this period in the Lal Ded hospital, which is Kashmir's main maternity hospital.

Besides surgeries, the general healthcare services in these hospitals during this period has been a usual business. Routine laboratory investigations and radiological procedures like MRI and CT Scan were also performed. The period also witnessed a 20 per cent decrease in services due to festivals like Eid and Independence Day.

The supply of medicine stock is sufficient to last until the end of September. The second half of the stock will be received before October. The administration has also provided funds to several hospitals to procure additional medicines and to cover the patient requirements, the deputy commissioner said.
