New European Guidelines ‘Drastically’ Reduce Statin Eligibil
In this cohort study representing 66909 apparently healthy individuals, 4% qualified for statins according to the 2021 ESC guidelines compared with 20% to 34% according to guidelines from the ESC/European Atherosclerosis Society in 2019, ACC/AHA, and UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The clinical performance of the 2021 ESC guidelines could be improved by lowering the treatment threshold for statins. The 2021 ESC guidelines dramatically reduce statin eligibility in low-risk European countries, and future European guidelines should consider lower treatment thresholds to increase the use of statins for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
