Opioid Management in Individuals With Advanced Cancer-Related Pain and Opioid Misuse or Use Disorder
This qualitative study examines the development of consensus among clinicians on strategies to manage advanced cancer-related pain in individuals with cooccurring opioid misuse or opioid use disorder.
In this qualitative study, the use of buprenorphine/naloxone for opioid use disorder was deemed appropriate, but its use for opioid misuse was less clear. Participants considered methadone an important tool for treating opioid use disorder and cancer-related pain, but policy and safety concerns exist. This study provides consensus-based guidance for clinicians and highlights research and policy gaps that warrant urgent attention to meet the needs of people with cancer-related pain and opioid misuse/use disorder.
