A new approach to anesthesia for use during medialization thyroplasty, a procedure to correct unilateral vocal cord paralysis, has been found to allow analgesia while also enabling patients to respond to verbal commands.

“Thyroplasty surgery is intricate and requires near-perfect coordination of anesthesia and surgery for optimal conditions,” said Denise Wedel, MD, professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn. “The ideal approach allows for a delicate surgical approach in an awake, breathing patient, while sharing the airway.”

The need to balance appropriate levels of sedation and anesthesia while allowing the patient to verbally respond during surgery—in order to gauge the success of the repair—is a challenge for anesthesiologists....
