FDC Ltd, the company with the largest share in the ORS market, has overstepped the pricing limit of Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) product. In May 2016, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) had fixed the ceiling price of ORS, but now the ceiling has been challenged and the department of pharmaceuticals (DoP) has upheld the company's stand saying that the price fixation was faulty.

ORS falls under the National List of Essential Medicines and its ceiling price is Rs 16.25 for a 21.8g sachet but FDC priced it at Rs 17.17 for the same. Many companies are receiving licenses for ORS under food supplements or energy drinks which do not come under the fixed price scheme. In November last year, NPPA had referred the matter regarding licensing of energy drinks to the drug controller and FSSAI and sent them three reminders since but both said they will examine the matter in a joint meeting soon, nearly eight months after the matter was referred to them.
