On World Leprosy Day, PM Modi pledges to fulfill Mahatma Gan
In an emotional appeal, PM Narendra Modi said the nation has to strive hard to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi's dream of giving a dignified life to the people suffering from Leprosy. Furthermore, he asked the nation to work together to eliminate the social stigma attached to this disease.

In August 2016, a first-of-its-kind leprosy vaccine developed in India was launched on a pilot basis in five districts in Bihar and Gujarat by the Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research. The vaccine, called Mycobacterium indicus pranii (MIP), was launched as a preventive measure to people living in close contact with those infected.

Leprosy affects around 1.25 lakh people every year in India.
