Torsemide  & furosemide (Lasix), both are loop diuretics, which allows the body to get rid of excess fluid and alleviate edema. Torsemide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, or kidney failure.   Compared with furosemide, torsemide has increased bioavailability and a longer half-life, yet furosemide remains the most commonly used loop diuretic. Torsemide also has beneficial effects on myocardial fibrosis, the neurohormonal axis, and ventricular structure.  Torsemide has a longer duration of action and does not accumulate in renal failure. Torsemide Torsemide is the generic name for Demadex. It can treat edema that occurs from heart failure, kidney disease, and liver disease. It can also treat high blood pressure. Torsemide is available as a generic oral tablet in strengths of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 100 mg. It is usually taken once daily depending on the condition being treated. The diuretic effects of torsemide can be experienced within 1 hour of administration. Effects can last from 6 to 8 hours with an elimination half-life of 3.5 hours. Studies have shown that torsemide has a longer overall duration of effects and a lower risk of worsening kidney function. Lasix (Furosemide) Lasix is also known by its generic name, furosemide. Similar to torsemide, Lasix can treat edema as well as high blood pressure. Lasix can be administered as a 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg oral tablet. It can also be given as a 10 mg/1 mL injection in certain settings. Oral Lasix is given as a single dose for treatment. Additional doses can be given to reach therapeutic effects depending on the condition and symptoms. Like torsemide, the diuretic effects of Lasix are reached within 1 hour after administration. The elimination half-life is relatively shorter than that of torsemide at 2 hours, which means a shorter overall duration of effects.... Read more
